WINSTON WROTE his next letter to his mother after his detachment of troops had passed Korosko, 120 miles south of Aswan. Their next stop would be seventy miles further up the Nile at Wadi Halfa where they would transfer to a newly built railway line, because the river became unnavigable while it negotiated its long Dongola bend. The railway took a short cut in a south-easterly direction, crossing the river at a bridge next to Abu Hamed before the track continued alongside the eastern bank as far as Atbara.
